An exhibition by Eddy Wertheym

 

“When I look at a body it gives me choice of what to put in a painting, what will suit me and what won't. There is a distinction between fact and truth. Truth has an element of revelation about it. If something is true, it does more than strike one as merely being so.”

In the fall of 2006, when Agnes Wertheym, Eddy’s mother, was diagnosed with a terminal disease, he knew they would only have a short period of time left to share. Living in her home town of Amsterdam, Eddy would  visit her every few weeks  and spend a few days with her trying to cherish every moment with her. These days and nights turned out to be most precious and intimate moments.

Preserving their moments together in hundreds of sketches and photographs, he knew that one day they would crystallize into a body of paintings dedicated to her and the moments they had shared.

In May 2007 she passed away.

 

 

By watching the series of paintings of Wertheym’s mother at the end of her life, we are introduced to an elegant aristocratic looking woman of great beauty and honest charm, asking her son each time insistently how much he had paid for the airfare, adding always a few more dollars for the grandchildren. Any objection would have been useless…..

 

Her hands, painted without any “make up” tell us the story of her life, a life of escape and hiding, of fear and survival.  A life of dignity, of richness and character, of principals and responsibility, a life where feelings and weaknesses did not have much place - until these special days when she opened up her heart to her son.

 

And still there is an interesting contradiction in Wertheym’s work. In our days the perception of aesthetics and beauty is constantly changing, being deeply influenced by the media. As a plastic surgeon Wertheym serves this quest for bodily perfection. As an artist he follows the footsteps of Lucian Freud who distinguishes between fact and truth. And in this sense the painted hands of his mother are true hands, hands that touch one deeply.

רגעים

תערוכה של אדי ורטהיים

 

"בהסתכלי על גוף האדם, נותרת בידי הבחירה כיצד אכניסו אל הציור.

מה מתאים בעיני ומה לא.

יש להבחין בין העובדה לאמת. לאמת יש מרכיב של התגלות.

כשדבר הוא אמיתי, הוא נוגע בך מעבר לעצם היותו."

בסתיו 2006, כאשר אגנס ורטהיים, אמו של אדי, אובחנה כסובלת ממחלה סופנית- הוא ידע שנותר רק זמן קצר לחלוק ביחד.

מאותו רגע טס לבקרה בעיר מגוריה אמסטרדם לעיתים קרובות ככל האפשר, מנסה למצות כל רגע שנותר. רגעים אלה הפכו להיות רגעי קירבה מיוחדים.

באביב 2007 היא נפטרה.

 

בניסיון להנציח ולהאריך רגעים אלה עשה מאות צילומים ורישומים. כבר אז חשב שבבוא היום ינצור רגעים אלה בציוריו.

 

הסתכלות בסדרת הציורים בה צייר ורטהיים את אמו בימיה האחרונים מגלה אשה אלגנטית, בעלת מראה אצילי, המקרינה יופי וקסם אישי.

לרגע לא שוכחת לדאוג לאנשים סביבה-לפנק בשוקולד, לשלם עבור טיסת בנה ולהוסיף דמי כיס לנכדים. לסרב לה  - אינה אפשרות....

 

הציורים כנים, אינם מייפים את המציאות ובזאת כוחם.

ציור ידי האם, מספר את סיפור חייה-

אחיזה נחושה בחיים גם בתקופות קשות של מלחמה וחולי.

סיפור חיים של כבוד, עצמה, עקרונות ואחריות. אורח חיים שאין בו מקום לרגשנות וחולשה.

רק באותם ימים ורגעים אחרונים - נפתח מחסום הרגש ופינה מקום לקירבה ולפתיחות -

רגעים מיוחדים שיחרתו בזכרון הבן ויונצחו בציורים.

 

בעיסוקו של אדי ורטהיים ככירורג פלסטי, הוא מתחבר לשאיפת לב האדם ליצירת דימויגוף מושלם.

כניגוד מעניין עבודתו כאמן שואפת לשמר את האדם וגופו כמו שהוא- מבלי לייפות.

הידיים של האם  הן ידיים אמיתיות, ולכן אוחזות בעצמה , ברגש.
